Lemon shark

Negaprion brevirostris
Lemon shark
Taille max : 3,40 m

Geographical distribution:
North and South America, West Coast of Africa

Biology:
The lemon shark is easily identified by its two dorsal fins of the same size and by its yellowish colour.  Unlike some sharks, which have to swim constantly so as not to drown, this species is able to rest on the bottom because it has branchial muscles that can circulate water through its mouth and gills.
It is a viviparous shark with a litter ranging from 4 to 17 young.  It spends the first part of its life in coastal bays, hidden in the mangroves, then goes out to sea from time to time once it is fully grown.
Like all sharks, the lemon shark is not naturally aggressive towards man.  Very timid, nets have to be installed when divers need to intervene in the shark enclosure.  The sharks are on one side of the aquarium and the working divers on the other.
